This precedent study was a studio project in which we were tasked with analyzing formal and conceptual principals throughout the given building design. Designed by VJAA,  the Type/Variant House in Wisconsin is a family retreat concieved of as a collection of wooden volumes clad in copper and manipulated in order to create space.

The project began with studying plans, sections, and elevations, as well as producing our own set of technical drawings. We then created a series of diagrams in order to clarify particular organizational principals of the design(above).

After generating our individual diagrams, we were grouped to come up with a physical diagrammatic model. Made from douglas fir, chipboard,  cardboard, and copper rod, this model reduces the house to its basical volumes, highlighting how the manipulation of simple rectangles creates both space and orientation. The copper rod represents both the main approach to the house as well as the primary view from the kitchen and living room.
