8. Museum of the City / Charleston

City Planning Maps - 1673, 1739, 1780, 1849

Museum of the City was an eight-week long studio project beginning with historical analysis of Charleston, SC. We began by studying the historical context of Charleston and producing analytical diagrams on various topics. I chose to focus on the development of the city over time and mapped the progression by studying various historical city plans.

Following our analytic studies, we visited Charleston and were assigned a site in which we were to design a museum that embodied our experience within the city. Although there was no specific program, the main requirements included the use of four wall types: Wall of the City, Wall of the Surveyor, Wall of Books, and Wall of Light, as well as two given volumes. Through my articulation of the four wall types, I attempted to capture the experience of Charleston’s long alleyways, the repetition found among Charleston’s single-house door openings, and the dappled light through Charleston’s abundant foliage.
